Definition explanation
A definition sets usable boundaries. "An algorithm is a set of instructions" is too broad if the essay needs to distinguish algorithm, program, model, and implementation.
Use four moves:
- Place the term in a larger category.
- Name features that distinguish it.
- Give a clear case.
- Test a borderline or noncase.
Definitions may vary by field. State which usage governs and why.
Process explanation
A process explanation describes change through time. It begins with an initial state, shows transitions, and ends with an output or new state.
Seton Hill University's guide to writing a process description distinguishes a process, which follows stages of change, from a mechanism description, which focuses on an object's function and operation, and from instructions, which direct the reader's actions.
Process questions include:
- What triggers the first stage?
- Which stages are mandatory or reversible?
- What moves between stages?
- Can stages overlap?
- Where do delays, branches, or feedback occur?
A neat numbered list may distort a continuous or branching process. Say when order is simplified.
Causal explanation
Causal explanation accounts for an outcome. It must do more than show that one event preceded another.
For a battery that lost capacity, possible causes include temperature exposure, charging pattern, cell age, manufacturing variation, measurement error, or software estimation. A causal essay weighs these candidates with relevant evidence.
Separate the event to be explained from the evidence used to explain it. A capacity reading establishes an outcome only if the measurement is sound. Temperature logs, charge histories, cell tests, and comparison devices then bear on competing causes. The writer should also distinguish a trigger from a background condition and a contributing cause from a sufficient cause.
The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy's entry on causal approaches to scientific explanation describes mechanistic explanations as accounts of organized causal components that work together to produce an outcome. It also notes that causal explanation can include systems and information whose structure is not captured by a simple mechanical part list.
Use cause language only when the evidence supports direction and alternatives have been considered.
Systems explanation
A systems explanation studies behavior created by relations across a boundary. It may include:
- stocks that accumulate;
- flows that add or remove;
- positive or negative feedback;
- thresholds;
- delays;
- constraints;
- interaction across levels;
- adaptation to changing conditions.
Traffic congestion, electrical grids, ecosystems, and content-recommendation markets all resist single-chain explanation. An intervention may alter feedback elsewhere in the system.
One example: a room that overheats
Definition
Define operative temperature, heat gain, cooling load, and thermostat set point.
Process
Trace solar gain, surface warming, air heating, sensor response, and cooling cycle.
Causal
Test glazing, occupancy, sensor position, equipment capacity, and weather as explanations for the observed event.
Systems
Map heat flows, control feedback, door opening, thermal mass, occupancy schedules, and delay.
Each form adds a different answer. Combining them works when transitions are explicit.
Selection questions

Title the essay after the primary question, then use secondary forms as support.
